Connecting Two Nations Since 1949
The Sri Lanka Women's Association in the UK was founded in 1949 by Lady Evelyn De Soysa and Mrs Laurel Casinader to serve the Ceylonese women's community in Britain. Today it remains the oldest Sri Lankan women's organisation in the United Kingdom.
The SLWA is non-political, multi-cultural, and multi-religious. It brings together Sri Lankan women, their families, and friends across the United Kingdom. It supports education and welfare in Sri Lanka through its registered charity.
Our 77th Anniversary
In 2026 the SLWA marks 77 years of community, charity, and service. From a small gathering of Ceylonese women in post-war London to an internationally affiliated organisation with a registered education charity. This year celebrates that journey.

The SLWA Education Scheme
Since 1976 the SLWA has focused on education as a force for change. The SLWA Education Scheme was registered as a charity in 1998 and funds educational grants for disadvantaged women and girls in Sri Lanka. Grants cover secondary school, university, and vocational levels.
Administered by trustees drawn from the SLWA membership, every pound donated goes directly to students in Sri Lanka. Functions and events held throughout the year raise funds for the scheme.
Become a Member of the SLWA
