Over the years the SLWA has funded educational grants, community health projects, and welfare causes both in the UK and in Sri Lanka. This page records work carried out through the Education Scheme and the SLWA Welfare Fund.

Education Scheme

Educational Grants Awarded

Grants are awarded to secondary school students, university students, and vocational learners in Sri Lanka through the SLWA Education Scheme, a registered UK charity.

2018 57 students — 4 grant programmes
English Teaching Programme — Sarasawiuyana Maha Vidyalaya, Kandy District
A six-month English teaching programme, later extended to nine months following requests from students and parents.
Secondary School Girls — Hewavitharana Maha Vidyalaya, Rajagiriya
Educational grants to 3 students.

Community & Welfare Projects

Alongside the Education Scheme, the SLWA Welfare Fund has supported health, community, and humanitarian causes in Sri Lanka and internationally.

Chronic Kidney Disease Hospital, Anuradhapura
Donations to support patients suffering from chronic kidney disease in the North Central Province. CKD disproportionately affects farming communities in this region of Sri Lanka.

Water & Health
Water Purification System, Polonnaruwa District
In collaboration with the Inner Wheel in Colombo, a water purification system was provided for a school of 800 people at risk of chronic kidney disease from contaminated water.

Disability Support
Prithipura Home — Activity Building Upgrade
The Ceylon Fellowship of Service Prithipura Home for children with disabilities received funding to upgrade the Activity Building and improve the physical wellbeing of its residents.

Prithipura Home — Flood Repairs
Additional donations were made to the Prithipura Home following flood damage to the premises caused by severe flooding in Sri Lanka. The SLWA responded to this emergency appeal directly.

Support for the YWCA's Girl Child Project, working with underprivileged young girls in Sri Lanka to improve access to education and opportunity.

Indonesia Tsunami Appeal — DEC
Donated to the Indonesia Tsunami Appeal through the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), responding to the international humanitarian crisis.
